Dentistry using power instruments
Whilst I do still run hand floats (rasps), a majority of the time I use equine specific power instrumentation. Over the years I have found that horses tolerate this type of instrumentation far more and it is more soft tissue friendly and therefore I have happier equine patients! The type of instrumentation I use is very clever; the cutting surface is diamond coated and reduces tooth very effectively but you could also run it on the underside of your forearm and it wouldn't even mark it is so soft tissue friendly.
Geriatric horses really benefit from this type of instrumentation as their teeth are not as anchored as they used to be and horses really do not like the tugging of a hand rasp no matter how sharp the blade is. On many occasions it has not been possible for my clients elderly horses to be done by hand because they find it so uncomfortable but now are happy using power.
You are very limited as to how much corrective dentistry can be done using hand floats and where tooth height needs to be reduced or the dental arcades (row of teeth) need to be rebalanced then power instrumentation is the only way of doing this.
Please feel free to friend request me on facebook, which I update regularly letting my clients from further
afield know where I am working so you don’t miss my visit!
